How to Get a Colorado Motorcycle License

Requirements for Motorcycle License in Colorado

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for an “M” endorsement for your driver’s license in Colorado.

To apply, make an appointment visit the Colorado DMV office and:

  • Complete an application.
  • Provide proof of your identity, residency, and legal presence.
  • Pay the required fees.
  • Pass a vision test.
  • Pass the written exam and road test OR provide proof of your completion of an MSF rider training course.

Colorado Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST)

Completing a Colorado MOST course will waive your requirements for taking a separate motorcycle skills test.

After you pass the course, you’ll receive a MOST license waiver card.

When you get the waiver, you’ll need to make an appointment to visit the DMV and present the original copy to add your motorcycle endorsement.

A typical course costs between $200 and $335.

The Basic Rider Course consists of 15 total hours (5 hours of classroom training and 10 hours of riding exercises.)

Colorado Motorcycle Permits

If you are under 18 years old and have never been licensed, you’ll need to first apply for your Colorado motorcycle instruction permit.

To apply visit your DMV office and:

  • Complete the application.
  • Provide proof of your identification, residency, and legal presence.
  • Pay the required fees.
  • Pass the written motorcycle exam.
  • Pass a vision test.
  • Provide proof of completion of a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training program if you are 16 years old or younger.

A Colorado motorcycle permit allows you to:

  • Practice riding while supervised by a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old.
  • Practice riding with an MSF instructor if your are 16 years old or younger.

Motorcyclists under 18 years old must hold the permit for at least 12 months.

How Much Does a Motorcycle License Cost in Colorado?

The fees for a motorcycle endorsement in CO are:

  • Instruction permit: $18.52.
  • Add motorcycle endorsement: $2.
  • Duplicate license: $12.
  • Driver’s license renewal: $30.87.

To add the motorcycle endorsement after completing the requirements, you’ll need to renew or replace your existing driver’s license.

Transfer an Out-of-State Motorcycle License When Moving to Colorado
