How to Apply for a Colorado Motorcycle License

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for an “M” endorsement in Colorado.

To apply, visit the Colorado DMV office and:

  • Complete an application.
  • Provide proof of your identity, residency, and legal presence.
  • Pay the required fees.
  • Pass a vision test.
  • Pass the written exam and road test OR provide proof of your completion of an MSF rider training course.

Colorado Motorcycle Permits

If you are under 18 years old and have never been licensed, you’ll need to first apply for your Colorado motorcycle instruction permit.

To apply visit your DMV office and:

  • Complete the application.

  • Pay the required fees.
  • Pass the written motorcycle exam.
  • Pass a vision test.
  • Provide proof of completion of a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training program if you are 16 years old or younger.

A Colorado motorcycle permit allows you to:

  • Practice riding while supervised by a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old.
  • Practice riding with an MSF instructor if your are 16 years old or younger.

Motorcyclists under 18 years old must hold the permit for at least 12 months.

Transfer an Out-of-State Motorcycle License When Moving to Colorado

  • Complete an application.
  • Surrender your out-of-state license.
  • Provide proof of your identity, residency, and legal presence.
  • Pay the required application and testing fees.

  • Pass the written exam.
