Explanation: Motorcycle Lane Positioning

In order to pass your motorcycle permit exams and to become a safe rider, it’s important to know why a particular answer on the motorcycle written test is correct.

When riding a motorcycle you can choose from 3 main lane positions in a given lane of travel. They include the left portion (position 1), the center portion (position 2), and the right portion (position 3).

The left and right lane positions often follow the left and right wheel paths of most passenger cars.

The best position will depend on the circumstances you face, and it is important to select a lane position that will:

  • Increase your ability to see and be seen.
  • Allow you to stay out of the blind spots of other drivers.
  • Help you avoid hazards or irregularities on the surface of the road.
  • Help you communicate your intentions with other motorists.
  • Avoid blasts of wind when being passed or riding alongside other vehicles.
  • Provide you with enough of a space cushion and an escape route.
  • Set yourself up for maneuvers and turns.

While the best position will depend on the specific circumstances you face, it is important to keep in mind that the center of the lane can often be the place where debris and oil is most likely to collect and where you’re likely to encounter manhole covers.
