Explanation: Motorcycle Blind Spots

In order to pass your motorcycle permit exams and to become a safe rider, it’s important to know why a particular answer on the motorcycle written test is correct.

Just like passenger cars, motorcycles have blind spots on either side.

These blind spots are areas around the bike that cannot be seen in the mirrors.

In order to check that your blind spot is clear, you’ll need to physically turn your head around to look.

It is very important to check your blind spots before changing lanes or turning.

However, checking your blind spots by turning your head should also be part of your normal scanning routine as you ride down the road.

This ensures that you stay aware of what’s going on around you and that you know which escape paths are available to you.

When you do check your blind spots, be sure to keep your arms steady and not to initiate a maneuver before your check is complete.

When checking your blind spots to change lanes on multi-lane roadways, be sure to take a look at the lane next to the one your plan to move into as well to ensure another vehicle isn’t trying to go where you are.
