Explanation: Braking on a Motorcycle

In order to pass your motorcycle permit exams and to become a safe rider, it’s important to know why a particular answer on the motorcycle written test is correct.

The correct way to brake on your motorcycle is by using both the front and rear brake at the same time.

You should apply firm, gradual pressure to both the front brake lever and the rear brake pedal at the same time.

Avoid grading or jamming either brake, otherwise you may cause your wheel to lock up.

Maximum braking power is accomplished when you use both brakes at once without locking either wheel.

During an emergency stop, using both brakes simultaneously becomes even more important.

By practicing this during normal stops, you’ll develop good braking technique under all circumstances.

You can find more information about this topic in the motorcycle rider’s handbook.
