Explanation: Flat Tires on a Motorcycle
In order to pass your motorcycle permit exams and to become a safe rider, it’s important to know why a particular answer on the motorcycle written test is correct.
A flat front tire on a motorcycle will often cause the steering to feel heavier.
This will make it more difficult to control and balance your motorcycle.
A flat rear tire will often cause the motorcycle to sway from side to side.
You will typically not be able to hear when your tire goes flat. The best sign of a flat tire is a change in your motorcycle’s handling.
When you are riding and you suspect a tire has failed, you should:
- Keep a firm grip on the handlebars.
- Only brake with the tire that is not flat, if braking is needed.
- Carefully edge towards the side of the road to a stop once you’ve slowed to a safe speed to do so.
You can find more information about this topic in the motorcycle rider’s handbook.
