Explanation: Turning on a Motorcycle

In order to pass your motorcycle permit exams and to become a safe rider, it’s important to know why a particular answer on the motorcycle written test is correct.

One of the major causes of single vehicle collisions for motorcycles is when the rider handles a turn or curve incorrectly.

Part of a successful turn is looking through the turn to where you want to go.

The proper way to look through a turn is by turning just your head and keeping your eyes level with the horizon.

Failing to look through the turn can cause you to run out of your lane or hit whatever you have fixated on.

The 4 steps to a successful turn are:

  • Slow down before entering the curve.
  • Look, by turning your head to see where you are going.
  • Press on the handgrips in the direction of the curve.
  • Roll on the throttle to maintain or increase speed as you move through the curve.

You can find more information about this topic in the motorcycle rider’s handbook.
