How to Measure Motorcycle Handlebars
If you’re in the market for new handlebars entirely or you are looking to buy some new grips, you’ll need to know how to measure your bars.
The main handlebar measurement that most riders are familiar with is the diameter. This will dictate what size grips you need and whether or not the handlebars will be compatible with the mounting brackets on your bike.
To measure the diameter of your handlebars, simply take a tape measure and measure the full width (diameter) of an open end.
The majority of handlebars are either 1″ or 7/8″.
Motorcycles like Harley Davidson and Indian will typically have 1″ bars.
Metric motorcycles like Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki will feature 7/8″ bars.
The next handlebar measurement you can take is the riser spacing. This is the area between the handlebar claps on your bike or the textured areas on your bars.
Other handlebar measurements include:
- Overall width: the distance from end to end.
- Pullback: the distance from the mount to the end of the grips.
- Total rise: the highest point of the handlebars.
- End rise: the height of the grip.
- Center width: the distance between where the bars start to bend.
