Having your dirt bike stolen is an unpleasant – and costly – experience, if you don’t have the right insurance coverage

Luckily, protecting your dirt bike from things like theft and damage caused by events other than collisions is easy and relatively inexpensive.

All you need to do is compare dirt bike insurance quotes and get a policy that fits your needs.

Learn more about the type of insurance coverage that protects you from theft below.

Does a basic insurance policy cover theft?

Making sure that you and your dirt bike are covered under a variety of circumstances comes down to choosing the proper type of motorcycle insurance coverage.

A basic policy, or minimum liability insurance, does not cover your dirt bike from events like theft.

While a minimum policy will satisfy most state’s requirements for dirt bike insurance, it can leave you open to other risks.

Liability coverage is designed to pay for damages and medical expenses when you are responsible for causing a collision with another rider, vehicle, or someone else’s property.

You’ll need to add additional coverage to your dirt bike policy to cover theft. But, what if you leave your dirt bike stored in your garage? Will your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy cover a stolen bike?

Does a homeowner’s insurance policy cover your dirt bike?

In most cases, a home or renter policy will NOT cover your dirt bike.

For the most part, vehicles with a unique VIN are required to have a policy of their own.

This includes motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs, boats, etc.

Failing to have an individual policy for each of your dirt bikes will expose you to risk in the event that the bike is stolen or otherwise damaged while stored at home.

In order to protect your dirt bike from theft, you will need to add comprehensive coverage to your policy.

Theft Coverage for Dirt Bikes

Theft is covered by comprehensive coverage, which you’ll be able to add to your dirt bike insurance for an additional cost.

Comprehensive coverage is designed to protect you from things that happen outside of a collision with another vehicle or stationary object.

Comprehensive coverage can pay for things like:

  • Theft.
  • Vandalism.
  • Fire.
  • Falling objects.
  • Hail damage.
  • Water damage.
  • Damage caused by an animal.

While comprehensive coverage is optional, you’ll need it if you want to be fully protected.

To get the appropriate comprehensive coverage, you’ll need to choose a policy that makes sense for your budget, your circumstances, and the current market value of your dirt bike.

For newer models, the right coverage can even replace your dirt bike with a brand new one.

In other cases, your coverage will pay to repair or reimburse you for damages up to the market value of your dirt bike minus your selected deductible and depending on the limits you set.

Comprehensive coverage is one of the key components to having a full coverage policy.

If you’re interested in recouping the costs of a stolen bike, you’ll need to add comprehensive coverage to your policy.

Adding optional coverage will increase the cost of your dirt bike insurance, but even a policy with full coverage will typically only cost a few hundred dollars per year on average.

Be sure to compare quotes from a few different providers to make sure that you get the best deal.
