Your vehicle’s title is the primary document that demonstrates your ownership of the motorcycle. 

The title is needed to sell your motorcycle to someone else, transfer the motorcycle to a new state, or apply for a motorcycle title loan. 

If you’ve lost the title or it has become damaged, you’ll want to request a duplicate as soon as possible. 

This page will provide you with an overview of the steps involved with getting a duplicate motorcycle title with the Illinois Secretary of State (SOS).

How do I Replace a Title in Illinois?

Your options for requesting a duplicate motorcycle title include:

  • In person at your local SOS office.

To replace a lost motorcycle title in Illinois, you’ll need to:

Note that the IL SOS will not approve duplicate title requests that are made within 15 days of issuing an original title or 30 days within issuing a prior duplicate title. 

How long does it take to get a lost tile in Illinois?

After submitting your completed application, you can expect to receive your duplicate title in about 2 to 3 weeks.

If you’ve ordered a corrected title or needed to make changes, you can expect processing times of up to 6 weeks.

Expedited Titles in Illinois

If you need to get your lost title faster, you can choose to request expedited service.

An expedited title will cost an addition $30.

If submitting by mail, you’ll need to mail your application, documents and payment via FedEx, UPS, or USPS Express Mail. You’ll also need to include the following line on the packages address: ATTN: Expedited Title Service.

Expedited duplicate title applications received by 12 pm can be sent out the same day or picked up in person at the Springfield office. Application received after 12 pm will be available for pick up or sent by mail the next business day.

Can I get a duplicate title online?

In Illinois, you cannot request a replacement title online at this time. 

How much does a lost tile cost in Illinois?

The fee for a duplicate title is $50.

What should you do if you lost your Illinois motorcycle title?

If your Illinois motorcycle title is lost, you should request a replacement as quickly as possible.
