New Jersey Motorcycle Training Course Details

New riders under 18 years old are required to complete an approved course. 

Successful completion of a NJ motorcycle safety course will waive the written test and motorcycle road test. 

When you arrive for your skills portion of the course, you’ll need to wear:

  • A DOT-approved motorcycle helmet. (You may need to provide your own, depending on the training provider).
  • Eye protection. 
  • A long-sleeve shirt or protective jacket. 
  • Long pants made of durable material with snug-fitting cuffs. 
  • Sturdy boots that cover your ankles. 
  • Full finger protective gloves.

How long is the New Jersey motorcycle safety course?

The New Jersey motorcycle safety course typically consists of a total of 15 hours, including:

  • 5 hours of classroom instruction.

What is covered in the rider training course?

The curriculum and exercises for your motorcycle safety course are developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), the New Jersey motorcycle safety and training coordinator and its administering agency. 

During your course, you’ll gain hands-on riding experience along with classroom instruction. 

The classroom portion will generally consist of 5 hours, including a motorcycle knowledge exam.

The hands-on training will typically last for 10 hours over 2 days, and end with a skills evaluation.
