Completing a New Mexico motorcycle safety course is one of the best ways to learn how to ride.

New Mexico Motorcycle Training Course Details

New riders under 18 years old are required to complete a course. 

Successfully completion of an approved motorcycle safety course will waive your NM MVD written exam and road test requirements for your motorcycle license. 

Note that some training locations will require you to complete the BasicRider eCourse prior to your first training session. 

When you arrive for your skills portion of the course, you’ll need to wear:

  • A DOT-approved motorcycle helmet. 
  • Eye protection. 
  • A long-sleeve shirt or protective jacket. 
  • Long pants made of durable material with snug-fitting cuffs. 
  • Sturdy boots that cover your ankles. 
  • Full finger protective gloves.

How long is the New Mexico motorcycle safety course?

The New Mexico motorcycle safety course typically consists of a total of 15 hours, including:

  • 5 hours of classroom instruction. 
  • 10 hours of hands-on skill training. 

Depending on the course provider, you may be able to complete the program over 2 or 3 days. 

How much is the New Mexico motorcycle safety course?

The fees for the NM Basic RiderCourse are:

  • $100 for riders under 18 years old. 
  • $200 for riders 18 and older.

What is covered in the rider training course?

The curriculum and exercises for your motorcycle safety course are developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), the New Mexico motorcycle safety and training coordinator and its administering agency. 

During your course, you’ll gain hands-on riding experience along with classroom instruction. 

The classroom portion will generally consist of 5 hours, including a motorcycle knowledge exam.

The hands-on training will typically last for 10 hours over 2 days, and end with a skills evaluation.
