Texas Motorcycle Training Course Details

All new riders are required to complete an approved motorcycle safety class in order to get a Texas motorcycle license. The course will also serve as your DPS written test and skills exam.

In order to enroll, you’ll need to:

  • Be at least 15 years old. 
  • Have satisfied the driver’s education requirements, if you are 15 to 17 years old. 

Riders under 18 years old are also required to pass the skills test through the DMV. 

Riders under 16 years old will be limited to riding motorcycles with an engine no larger than 250cc.  

Note that you’ll need to complete the MSF eCourse within 30 days of your first class. The online course will generally take about 5 hours to complete. 

When you arrive for your skills portion of the course, you’ll need to wear:

  • A DOT-approved motorcycle helmet. 
  • Eye protection. 
  • A long-sleeve shirt or protective jacket. 
  • Long pants made of durable material with snug-fitting cuffs. 
  • Sturdy boots that cover your ankles. 
  • Full finger protective gloves.

  • 5 hours of online classroom instruction.
