Is getting a moped worth it?

If you’re interested in short trips and lower speeds, a moped is a great way to get around on two wheels without breaking the bank.

They’re great for novice riders, are inexpensive to maintain, register, and insure, and also have some excellent gas mileage.

You can get a brand new moped for relatively cheap, and a used one for even cheaper.

On top of that, you’ll be saving on fuel, registration fees, and insurance as well.

Remember, in most states, motor scooters under 50cc don’t typically carry additional requirements. Scooters with engines of 50cc+ and top speeds of over 30 mph are generally treated the same as a motorcycle.

Consult your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for specific details and requirements.

How Much Does a Moped Scooter Cost

Just like top speeds for a scooter or moped, the cost often correlates to engine size.

The smaller the scooter, the cheaper it usually is.

However, there’s another quality spectrum that factors into the price tag as well.

For the most part, Chinese scooters and mopeds will be much cheaper than their Japanese or Italian counterparts.

You can find brand new Chinese mopeds from brands like TaoTao for around $700 to $900.

A nicer moped, like the Vespa Primavera has an MSRP of just under $4,000.

If you’re looking for a larger scooter, which will be treated like a motorcycle for licensing and registration, you can expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000.

The scooter engine size will play a major factor in the overall cost.

What is the average price of a moped?

To get a general idea of how much a moped scooter will cost by size, refer to the table below.

How Much is a New Moped

A new moped’s price will depend largely on the manufacturer and the quality.

A cheaper Chinese moped can be purchased online for well under $1,000. However, you may be required to assemble it yourself, and you’ll be lacking any dealer support if something goes wrong.

A higher end Japanese or Italian moped (Honda or Vespa) will range from about $2,000 to $5,000 new.

How Much is a Used Moped

Finding something used can be another great way to save even more money.

Depending on where you live, you can typically find a used moped for as little as a couple hundred dollars.

However, vintage models and collector scooters from makes like Vespa, Honda, or Peugeot will likely run you in the low to mid thousands. ($1,000 to $5,000).

How Much is a Scooter

As you go up in engine size above 50cc, you’ll enter “scooter” motorcycle territory.

This means that the bike will be capable of top speeds over 30 mph, but will also require:

  • A motorcycle endorsement.
  • A title and license plates.
  • Motorcycle insurance.

There is a wide range of sizes and features for scooters that will all affect the final price tag.

In general, you can expect a new scooter to cost between $2,000 and $10,000.

How Much is a Vespa Scooter

The Vespa brand is often what comes to mind when you think of a scooter or a moped.

Vespa is a luxury Italian scooter brand manufactured by Piaggio since 1946.

Most models are available with an engine size of 50cc, 150cc, or 300cc.

A new Vespa will cost you between $4,000 and $10,000.
