If you’ve got a short commute or need a fun, convenient way to get around town, mopeds are an excellent choice. 

They’re easy to ride, have great gas mileage, and are affordable to purchase and maintain.

If you already have a valid Alaska motorcycle license, you’ll definitely be ready to ride a moped or <50cc scooter. In fact, that’s typically the safest route to go. 

Alaska Moped Laws for <50cc Scooters

In order to ride a moped legally in Alaska, you’ll need to be sure to follow the rules and regulations. Failing to do so could result in traffic tickets, fines, or a suspended license. 

In Alaska, mopeds are defined as a motor-driven cycle with an engine displacement of less than 50cc. 

Riders under 18 and all passengers must be wearing a motorcycle helmet while riding a moped.

Do you need a license to drive a moped in Alaska?

In Alaska, you will generally need a M2 motorcycle license or a standard driver’s license to legally ride a moped on public roads. 

If the rider is 14 or 15 years old, they’ll need to apply for a engine displacement-restricted M2 motorcycle license. 

Otherwise, a moped with an engine of less than 50cc can be driven with a standard driver’s license. 

How to Get a Alaska Moped License

Since Alaska requires a standard license or M2 motorcycle license to ride a moped, you’ll usually need to:

  • Visit the DMV.
  • Submit an application. 
  • Provide proof of your identity, residency, and Social Security number.
  • Have parental consent, if applicable. 
  • Pass a written exam for your standard driver’s license and motorcycle endorsement, if applicable. 
  • Pass a vision test. 
  • Pass the road test or complete an approved Motorcycle Safety Course. 
  • Pay the licensing fees.

Alaska Moped Registration & Insurance

For registration, title, and insurance purposes, mopeds and small-displacement scooters are generally treated like motorcycles in Alaska. 

You’ll need to visit the DMV and present proof of ownership to get a title and license plates.
