If you’ve got a short commute or need a fun, convenient way to get around town, mopeds are an excellent choice. 

They’re easy to ride, have great gas mileage, and are affordable to purchase and maintain. 

This page will cover the basic requirements for riding a moped in Colorado.

If you already have a valid Colorado motorcycle license, you’ll definitely be ready to ride a moped or <50cc scooter. In fact, that’s typically the safest route to go. 

Colorado Moped Laws for <50cc Scooters

In order to ride a moped legally in Colorado, you’ll need to be sure to follow the rules and regulations. Failing to do so could result in traffic tickets, fines, or a suspended license. 

In Colorado, mopeds fall into the “low-powered scooter” category of vehicles. 

Mopeds are defined as having:

  • No more than 3 wheels. 
  • An engine of no more than 50cc or an electric motor no more than 4,476 watts.

Do you need a license to drive a moped in Colorado?

In Colorado, you will generally need a standard driver’s license to legally ride a moped on public roads. 

How to Get a Colorado Moped License

Since Colorado requires a driver’s license to ride a moped, you’ll usually need to (if you don’t already hold a driver’s license):

  • Visit the DMV.
  • Submit an application. 
  • Provide proof of your identification and residency. 
  • Pass a vision exam. 
  • Pass a written test. 
  • Pass a driving test. 
  • Pay the licensing fees.

Colorado Moped Registration & Insurance

Low-powered scooters and mopeds must be registered. 

You’ll need to pay the $5.85 fee for a 3-year moped decal. 

You’ll also need a valid motorcycle insurance policy.

Regardless of the Colorado requirements, it’s always a smart idea to have insurance coverage when you ride any type of vehicle on public roads.
