Louisiana Moped Laws for <50cc Scooters

In order to ride a moped legally in Louisiana, you’ll need to be sure to follow the rules and regulations. Failing to do so could result in traffic tickets, fines, or a suspended license. 

The Louisiana OMV defines mopeds as motor-driven cycles or motorized bicycles. 


Motor-driven cycles include every motorcycle with a motor with no more than 5 hp. 

A motorized bicycle is defined as:

  • A vehicle with pedals, a helper motor, or both. 
  • Being equipped with a motor with no more than 1.5 hp. 
  • Having an engine size of no more than 50cc.
  • Having an automatic transmission. 
  • Having a top speed of no faster than 25 mph. 

Riders must obey all traffic laws, avoid highways/interstates, and wear approved eye protection and a helmet.

Do you need a license to drive a moped in Louisiana?

In Louisiana, you will generally need a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement to legally ride a moped on public roads.

Since Louisiana requires a license and motorcycle endorsement to ride a moped, you’ll usually need to:

  • Visit your local OMV office. 
  • Submit an application. 
  • Pass a knowledge test.
  • Take a motorcycle safety course or pass a skills test.
