In order to ride a moped legally in Maine, you’ll need to be sure to follow the rules and regulations. Failing to do so could result in traffic tickets, fines, or a suspended license.
In Maine, mopeds must meet all of the following criteria:
- 2 to 3 wheels.
- Wheels larger than 10” in diameter.
- Engine no larger than 50cc or electric motor no greater than 1,500 watts.

Do you need a license to drive a moped in Maine?
In Maine, you will generally need a valid operator’s license or moped license to legally ride a moped on public roads.
You’ll need to be at least 16 years old to ride a moped.
How to Get a Maine Moped License
Since Maine requires a driver’s license or moped permit to ride a moped, you’ll usually need to:
- Submit an application to the BMV.
- Pass a vision and knowledge exam.
- Pass the $35 application fee.
