If you already have a valid New York motorcycle license, you’ll definitely be ready to ride a moped or <50cc scooter. In fact, that’s typically the safest route to go.
New York Moped Laws for <50cc Scooters
In order to ride a moped legally in New York, you’ll need to be sure to follow the rules and regulations. Failing to do so could result in traffic tickets, fines, or a suspended license.
New York DMV classifies mopeds, motor scooters, and other types of 2-3 wheel vehicles based on their top speed.
Class A mopeds have a top speed of over 30-40 mph, and must meet all the same requirements as standard motorcycles.
Class B mopeds have a top speed of 20-30mph, and require both registration and insurance, but can be ridden with any class of license.
Class C mopeds have a top speed of no more than 20 mph. These must be registered and ridden with any class of license. Insurance is optional, but recommended.
Class B and Class C mopeds can only ride in the right-hand lane or the shoulder.
Helmets are required for Class A and Class B mopeds, and recommended for class C.

New York Moped Registration & Insurance
Registration is required for all types of mopeds in New York.
Moped titles are not required.
Inspections are only required for Class A mopeds.
Insurance is required for Class A and Class B limited-use motorcycles and is recommended for Class C limited use motorcycles.
