In order to ride a moped legally in Washington, you’ll need to be sure to follow the rules and regulations. Failing to do so could result in traffic tickets, fines, or a suspended license.
To qualify as a moped, the bike must:
- Have 2-3 wheels.
- Have an engine no larger than 50cc and no more than 2 brake hp.
- Have a top speed no faster than 30 mph.
- Meet all federal safety requirements for motor-driven cycles.
Riders must wear DOT-approved motorcycle helmets and eye protection at all times.
Mopeds are prohibited from sidewalks, bike paths, horse trails, hiking trails, and highways.
