North Dakota Snowmobile Registration Requirements

All ND residents must register their snowmobile through the North Dakota DOT. 

You will need to first apply for a title for your snowmobile. 

To register:

  • Visit your local DOT office. 
  • Provide proof of ownership. 
  • Complete a snowmobile registration application. 
  • Pay reh registration fee. 

Snowmobile registrations are valid for 2 years and must be renewed in odd-numbered years. 

Registration decals must be placed on each side of the front of the sled in a clearly visible location. 

Non-resident Snowmobile Permits

Non-resident visitors are required to purchase a snowmobile permit to ride their sled on public lands in North Dakota.

Permits are valid for up to 1 year. 

North Dakota Snowmobile Registration Cost

The fees for your ND snowmobile registration are as follows:

  • ND resident 2-year registration: $50. 
  • Non-resident snowmobile permit: $25 per year. 

Snowmobile Laws in North Dakota

All snowmobiles in North Dakota are required to have liability insurance. 

Required equipment for snowmobiles in North Dakota includes:

  • Headlight. 
  • Taillight. 
  • Brakes.
  • Muffler. 

To cross public roads, where permitted, you must first come to a complete stop and cross the road at a 90 degree angle. 

Be sure to also check the rules, regulations, and fees for the North Dakota snowmobile trails you plan on riding. Local laws and regulations may vary. 

Regardless of whether a particular state or trail requires it, snowmobile operators and passengers should always wear the proper safety equipment and helmets while riding.
